How do I password protect a PDF for free?

Upload the file, choose a password and download the encrypted copy — no account, payment or watermark involved. Anyone who receives the file will need the password to open it.

How strong is the encryption?

Files are encrypted with AES-256, the current standard for PDF encryption. Without the password the contents can't be read; all modern PDF readers on desktop and mobile support opening it once the password is entered.

What if I forget the password?

There is no recovery. We keep neither your file nor your password, so a forgotten password means the encrypted copy stays locked. Keep the original file and store the password in a password manager.

Is my password sent to your servers?

Yes — the encryption itself happens server-side, so the password travels with the request over an encrypted HTTPS connection. It's used once to encrypt the file, and the task data is automatically deleted within about 1 hour (or immediately if you delete it yourself).

Can I let people read the PDF but stop them printing or editing it?

This tool sets an open password — the document is unreadable without it. For granular rules like "viewable but not printable", use the Change PDF Permissions tool instead.
